Hepplewhite Pianoforte
New York City, 1798-1804
A very fine mahogany inlaid Hepplewhite pianoforte made by the partnership of Whaites and Charter who worked together from 1798-1804. Archibald Whaites and George Charters were partners in New York at 19 Barclay Street from 1798-1804. After the partnership dissolved, Whaites continued making pianos in New York while Charters went to Cincinnati and was known there from 1819 to 1825.This rectangular Federal period piano has very delicate tapered legs, a lower shelf, intact keyboard with a decorated maple panel above it and retains the original foot pedal. It is a beautiful example of the mahogany furniture of the period in addition to being a rare American piano. The case is in good condition with a couple of very minor repairs to the inlay. The works need complete overhauling but appears to be intact.

61 1/2" x 23" x 33 1/2" tall
